How Moss and Algae Damage Asphalt Shingle Roofs Over Time

  • Moss can lift shingles and trap moisture against the roof surface.

  • Algae can contribute to dark streaking and gradual surface wear.

  • Safe cleaning and routine inspections can help protect asphalt shingles.

If you notice moss on your roof or black streaks on roof surfaces, it is more than a curb appeal issue. East Tennessee humidity creates conditions where organic growth can spread across asphalt shingles. Over time, moss and roof algae damage can contribute to moisture problems and shorten the roof's life.

Why Moss Can Become a Roofing Problem

Moss holds moisture and can grow beneath shingle edges. As it thickens, it may lift shingles and make it easier for water to reach areas that should stay protected. Persistent moisture can increase the risk of deterioration beneath the shingles.

What Black Streaks Can Mean

Dark roof streaks often indicate algae growth. While staining may start as a visual concern, leaving buildup untreated can contribute to surface wear. An inspection can help determine whether the issue is cosmetic or part of a larger concern.

Choose Safe Roof Cleaning

Pressure washing can be too aggressive for asphalt shingles because it may loosen protective granules or damage the surface. A professional soft-wash approach can remove growth without the same force on shingle surfaces. Softwashing cleans the roof, but it doesn't protect it. Softwashing alone actually accelerates the degradation of the shingles by further drying out the asphalt, leading to faster and more extensive granule loss.

Our restoration service starts with cleaning, and then your roof is protected with our water-based acrylic coating that replenishes the oils in the asphalt and protects your shingles for 8+ additional years by locking the granules in place and reducing overall wear and tear on your roof from the elements.

Prevent Moss and Algae From Returning

Keeping gutters clear, trimming branches, and maintaining roof and attic airflow can help reduce moisture. Zinc strips may also help limit regrowth in some situations. If you need roof moss removal in Tennessee or want to know whether buildup has caused damage, contact Roof Guys of East Tennessee to request a roof inspection.
